MID-CENTURY ICON

The Era of the Eames Lounge Chair

Introduced in 1956, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman distilled craft, comfort, and industrial precision into a single quiet silhouette that still reads as contemporary decades later. At Mod Restoration we treat these pieces as important design objects: we preserve original proportions, repair structure where age and use demand it, and renew upholstery and cushions with materials chosen for long-term performance.

Every chair tells us when it was made, often before we open it, from its label, cushion construction, clip hardware, and how it was originally assembled. Knowing the era is the difference between a respectful restoration and an expensive mistake. Mismatched parts or shortcuts can stress veneers, seams, and mounts in ways that show up months later.

Herman Miller produced the chair across multiple eras, visible in labels, clip hardware, cushion builds, and shock-mount details. Understanding those differences is essential to restoring the chair faithfully and addressing the mechanical issues these chairs often develop over time.
